OUR GOAL

The focus of the Deaf Seniors Program is to provide information, resources and tools that will enable Deaf, hard of hearing and late-deafened senior adults to continue to be an integral and contributing part of their community, maintain their sense of dignity, enhance their sense of well-being, and improve the quality of their lives.

These objectives support DCARA’s mission to promote self-determination, independence, and the celebration of American Sign Language (ASL) among a diverse Deaf community, regardless of communication background.

WHAT WE DO

The Deaf Seniors Program provides the following services:

• Advocacy
• Communication Assistance
• Community Education
• Peer Counseling
• Information and Referral
• Independent Living Skills

In addition to receiving individual client support services, Deaf Seniors participate in a variety of activities, social gatherings, community education workshops and special events that are especially designed to meet the interests and needs of an active and growing senior population.

Workshop presenters are scheduled on a regular basis for Deaf Senior group meetings in Fremont, Hayward, San Jose, San Leandro, and Walnut Creek. Presentations and activities offer valuable information in areas of health, fitness, counseling, nutrition, computer programs, technology, education, Deaf issues, ADA laws, in-home support services, financial and estate planning, benefits, volunteering, recreation, community action, and more!

WHO WE SERVE

DCARA’s Deaf Senior program welcomes Deaf, hard of hearing or late-deafened citizens age 55 and older, who live in the northern California greater bay area.
